On 5 July 1975, Cape Verde became independent from Portugal. And at that time the first national flag of Cape Verde was taken into use. This flag is different from the current flag. In the first flag were the pan African colors, which are derived from the flag of the African Party for the independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. The vertical red bar in the Cape Verdean flag stood for the blood of national heroes and the revolutionary struggle. In the red bar there was an emblem with a black star (independence) in the middle of corn cobs and a seashell. The yellow horizontal bar stood for well-being and culture. And the green horizontal bar stood for agriculture and hope. The flag was very similar to that of the country of Guinea-Bissau. Below the image of the old flag (1975-1992).
Current flag of Cape Verde
In 1990, the Cape Verde Islands got a multi-party system and they said goodbye to only a socialist and pan African policy. The architect Pedro Gregorio was responsible for the creation of the new flag (1992). The new flag was introduced that reflected the new future of Cape Verde. The flag consists of a blue bar representing the Atlantic Ocean. The yellow stars represent the 10 most important islands of the Cape Verde archipelago.
