Special drinks Cape Verde

In Cape Verde you can enjoy food and drink. Local drinks belong to Cape Verde, both without and with alcohol. Mostly pure nature and made by man. We listed our top 5 best drinks below.

Grogue

The national liquor of Cape Verde is grogue. It is a distilled sugar cane and has an alcohol percentage of over 40%. The tradition of making and consuming this rum is deeply rooted in Cape Verde culture. Grogue is often produced by farmers and is a drink that is drunk on a variety of occasions. Just like rum, you have brown and white grogue. The brown grogue is slightly smoother and has been ripened for some time. This older rum can best be drunk pure. The white grogue is bright in color and younger. The young grogue is the ideal base for a cocktail mix.

Strela beer

The Cape Verde beer is Strela. A delicious pils beer brewed on the island of Santiago. Local beer can be ordered on all islands. In addition to the ordinary Strela beer you also have Strela Ego, Strela Kriola and Strela Petra. Delicious cold beer to enjoy after a sunny day.

Cape Verde caipirinha

The Cape Verde caipirinha is a Brazilian-inspired cocktail made with Cape Verde groque, cane sugar, lime and ice. There is also an alcohol-free variant with, for example, Ginger Ale as a replacement for the rum grogue. A delicious refreshing drink for the beach.

Fogo coffee

On the island of Fogo coffee has been cultivated for over 300 years. On the northern flanks and in the ancient crater of the volcano Pico de Fogo, high quality organic coffee is produced. The conditions are also ideal at Fogo; A volcanic soil, its high location and a favorable climate. In addition to the fine taste, volcanic coffee has the advantage that it can be stored for a long time. In 2011, the coffee at Fogo was tin fact (re-)discovered by the world. The Dutch government then gave a grant to professionalize the local coffee industry. From planting new coffee plants to the better training of coffee farmers. And the good news is that you can order Fogo coffee today in some specialized coffee bars abroad. The Starbucks coffee chain also has the Fogo coffee in its assortment.

Fogo wine

Fogo is a very fertile island, not only coffee but also wine is produced. In 1870,  the Frenchman Montrond settled on Fogo and began cultivating grapes. Thanks to the volcanic soil, the dry climate and sophisticated wine techniques, Fogo produces high quality wine. Both red, white and rosé wines. The Fogo wine is available everywhere under the wine label “Chã”.

There is no heaven but if there was it would be in cabo verde, in a perspex boat floating in iced groque.

Hi, I tried the Grogue. One of the bar lads poured me one as I normally drink dark rum. Brilliant choice of drink made me very happy and it’s locally produced, environmentaly reducing my carbon footprint.

Can not thank the bar lad enough.
