Is Cape Verde expensive?

The price level in Cape Verde is much lower than in most countries. Besides the opportunities offered by the Cape Verde archipelago as a travel destination, the lower price level is a very nice coincidence. Travelers that discover the beauty of this destination will benefit from lower prices of for example accommodation, food & drink, entertainment and transport. You can stay in a nice hotel room for 35-45 Euros per night for two people; You have a two-course dinner in a simple restaurant for 9 Euros; a guide for a day (without a car) will cost around 30 Euros and you can hire a taxi driver for about 2 Euros per kilometer. If we compare the avarage Cape Verdian prices with the European countries The Netherlands and Belgium, the prices are 20% lower. So, Cape Verde is a lot cheaper. On the islands, which offer less amenities for travelers, the price difference is even higher. Enjoy the sunshine and imagine yourself surrounded in luxury which you can afford due to the lower prices. Or convenient and economical when you go on vacation with the family.

Benchmark – price difference with the Netherlands: 21% cheaper*

To have a clear understanding of the differences of the price level we benchmark the prices in Cape Verde with Europe’s one of most prosperous countries the Netherlands and Belgium.

Compared with the Netherlands the prices in Cape Verde are in all investigated sectors lower.
During a holiday a large part of the budget  is often spent on the accomodation, food, drinks and transportation. The price difference in these sectors is the highest. Especially transportation (taxi, bus, plane) is comparatively very cheap in comparison to the Netherlands.

Benchmark – price difference with Belgium: 21% cheaper*

Also prices in Cape Verde compared to Belgium are a lot lower. The same pattern is visible in the Netherlands, where the sectors Transport, hotels & restaurants and Alcohol often the most benefit. This indicates that Cape Verde as a holiday destination is very accessible for travelers with less budget.

* Data from the graphs is obtained from the World Bank, the most reliable source comparing international prices. Data is from 2010, and gives more of an idea of the current status than a hard conclusion.

An all inclusive holiday in August to Sal is around £1800pp for two weeks per person. I can go on a Mediterranean cruise for two weeks at the same time of year, and even if I include the all inclusive drinks package, the cruise is much cheaper at around £1400 pp

We can go much cheaper to an all inclusive holiday in August on Sal then 1400 euro’s :-). And this includes the flight.

We appreciate your response, but this article is not about comparing all-inclusive hotels vs Cruises.

So far, not true. Prices are similar or the same as in the Netherlands, at least for tourists.

      Hi Annelies,

Thanks for your comment, interesting! We do not agree with you, based on our experiences which is also supported by multiple international research organisations, Cape Verde is significant more inexpensive than West Europe. This also applies for the more touristic areas. Perhaps you were unlucky.

It depends a bit. Food that is imported can be relatively ‘expensive’. Also the place where you buy your food is influencing the price. We buy the products for the following prices:
-1 kg tomotoes for around 3 euro
-1 ltr milk for 1 euro
      -12 eggs for 2 euro

So that is significant cheaper :-)

In Germany 10 eggs cost 1,20 euro, 1 l milk 0,69 euro, 1 kg tomatoes in winter 1.79 euro, 2,5 kg potatoes 1.99 euro. That is Lidl basic prices. So it is much much cheaper in Western Europe.
