Fontainhas

Fontainhas is a fairytale village in the north of the island of Santo Antao. According to the National Geographic, it belongs to the villages in the world with the most beautiful view. The picturesque village consists of colored houses located on an edge of a deep cliff of hundreds of meters deep. Fontainhas is surrounded by green mountains and has a great sea view.

Fontainhas is situated on the popular walking route of Santo Antao between Ponto do Sol and Cha de Igreja, which runs along the erratic north-east coast. This trail is for the most part accessible only on foot and is very impressive. The walking time of this route is over 6 hours, but many walkers often do a small part of this path. The starting point of the trail is located near the town of Ponta do Sol. A lovely town where you can wander around and where you find all kinds of amenities. An ideal base for various activities. Fontainhas is approximately 2 kilometers from Ponta do Sol. Via a cobbled road that goes up you are within three quarters of an hour’s walk in Fontainhas. Of course you can also arrange a van that takes you to the village. Fontainhas is a small village with a central square and a few houses. The colored houses, the greenery and the beautiful view makes this a great place to be. Down in the valley there is also a small beach, although this is a challenging descent if you want to go there. From Fontainhas you cannot continue by car, but the walking path continues across the mountain towards the village of Corvo. From the top of the mountain you look out over the valley of Fontainhas, but you can also see the town of Ponto do Sol in the distance.
