UNESCO biosphere reserve at Fogo and Maio

The islands of Fogo and Maio were designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO at the end of 2020. A biosphere reserve is an area that has a unique ecosystem in which biodiversity and local rights are protected. It is the first biosphere reserve in the Cape Verde Islands. Cape Verde is even part of a group of restricted countries with two biospheres. The biosphere reserves on Fogo and Maio will help a sustainable development of both islands.

Purpose of a UNESCO biosphere reserve

The purpose of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves is to unite human activities with the sustainable use and protection of biodiversity. The biodiversity in a biosphere reserve is protected as much as possible. The UNESCO supports this protection and ensures greater understanding and appreciation of the life environment among the local population.

Fogo biosphere area

The volcanically active island of Fogo is home to different species of birds and reptiles. Here you will find, for example, the special López-Jurado’s semi-high gecko (Hemidactylus lopezjurado), a skink (Chioninia vaillantii xanthotis) and various sea turtles.

Maio biosphere area

This biosphere reserve is mainly located in the sea and is home to endemic species such as whales and turtles. In addition, this area is also popular with many sea birds, reptiles and fish.
